Oracle 10g RAC (Real Application Cluster) is a highly powerful tool in the quest for 100% availability. It’s widely regarded as the weapon of choice for Oracle shops wanting to maximise availability, minimise their business risk and guarantee their systems are running at maximum efficiency. RAC ensures systems are highly available by providing backups for server failure with minimum disruption to the overall infrastructure. In the event of a problem with one server (node), resource is switched automatically to another server - ensuring your systems stay live whilst maintenance is carried out on the original fault.

But what happens when both nodes go down, on a two node system? It’s an unbelievably rare occurrence that was faced by one of our clients recently, outlining perfectly the need for a dedicated support provider - such as Teamsolve - to complement your RAC solution.

CASCAiD Ltd, a leading supplier of careers software to the education sector, were faced with a series of atypical events that caused serious problems for their systems. Richard Winfield, Teamsolve’s Technical Services Manager explains: “Teamsolve were alerted to a failover on the first node, followed by the second node failing straight after.”

Teamsolve were extremely quick to react, deploying a senior technical consultant to investigate the problem. The problem happened to be a compatibility problem between an external disk, and the way it was sharing information between the two nodes. Regardless of it being a problem that had never been seen before in the UK, Teamsolve’s consultants worked through the night to get both nodes back live the following day.

Teamsolve have great pedigree in the Oracle 10g RAC field.
