Teamsolve were delighted to talk at the Derbyshire Information Security Consortium (DISC) held at the University of Derby on Wednesday 23rd April 2009, with both students and local businesses declaring the event a great success.
DISC is a group that sits at the University of Derby, with the focus of creating links within local industries to raise the profile of information security within the Derby area.
The group holds regular, free of charge guest talks delivered by leading high profile professionals in the security area and from within industry itself.
Teamsolve, based just around the corner from the University's Kedleston Road Campus at Vernon Gate, Derby, were DISC's guest speaker for April 2009. Dave Bennett, Senior Technical Architect at Teamsolve, presented around the area of security, on the specific topic of 'Data on the Move - But Not in the Wrong Hands!'
Dave works with a vast range of organisations to improve the performance, resilience and security of business systems. Dave is renowned within the industry for addressing much more that just technology. His approach to business security encapsulates the broader remits of business operating requirements, policies and procedures and change management within organisations.
Dave has worked with a multitude of clients, from global conglomerates such as FTSE 100 Financial Institutions, Local and Central UK Government, Colleges and Universities and smaller private sector companies to design, implement and advise on a range of IT security-based topics.
Teamsolve's presentation discussed some of the main security threats within the modern business and practical measures that organisations should take to address them, with the subject raising a number of interesting questions from the audience. We posed the question, 'When you're trusting your employees with sensitive data, what should you do to secure and protect both the data and the individual who is probably just 'doing their job?'
"Data on the move is a major cause of high profile security lapses" said Dave Bennett. "Our experience has led us to believe that organisations still aren't doing enough to protect their data. Oracle is an example of a vendor making great strides in this area, with a plethora of new technology available on the market to counteract security issues. The University of Derby was an ideal forum for discussion, with both local businesses and our IT employees of the future, raising valid concerns around their specific security grey areas".
